Spammers Ahoy!

Looks like the spammers are ever more ambitious and still enthused at spamming us all, mainly with World of Warcraft related spam. I deleted at least 5 blatant spammer accounts today. To attempt to combat this passwords will initially be randomly generated and emailed to new users, though they can then be changed.

Short of searching the whole site there's little I can do, so I'd encourage people to check their stories. If anyone has been affected by this and received any spam reviews from them that you can't delete then let me knowand I will clean up the story in questions review page.. Apologies for the problems.

No More Anon Reviews
I'm sad to announce the anonymous reviews feature has been turned off due to heavy amount of spamming. From now on you will only be able to leave a review if you are registered and logged into the archive. Apologies for the inconvenience this causes.

Stargate Fan Awards 2007 Voting Ends Tommorrow

Site Status + SG Awards open for voting!

Firstly, a reminder about the Stargate Fan Awards 2007. Voting opened over a week ago, with quite a McKay/Weir presence in the nominations for this last year. There's some great art, fic and vids for our ship and in general the awards are a great way to discover new creations so we recommend you get on over there and takeat least a look at all the wonderful things! :)

Also, just a little update on the status of the websites. In particular I'd like to recognise the kind and generous people who have donated to the site fund or used the stores on McKay/Weir Central which give us a cut of spendings - over the last couple of years we've raised just over £110! That's enough to pretty much cover hosting and domain costs from late 2005 when the site was setup until late 2007 and even into mid 2008 for the domain name. Whoooo! That's far more than I was hoping and a lot more than I expected - thank you to you all! To everyone in general a big thanks for the support you've shown the site and the contributions you continue to give to the community here - the sites would be nothing without every one of you. I'm glad that so much fun and friendship is found through the forums and hope you all continue to enjoy it here as the show goes into Season 5 this year.

Jan/Feb Challenges

Over on WeirMcKayShip we're ressurecting the monthly challenge with two picked at random from the challenge section here. There's no deadline generally, no challenges close, but if you want to be considered for the formal contest (and its prize) then you need to get the response in by March 15th. We're also changing the rules to accept not just fic but vids and graphics (or any other media you can think to create it in).

For more details on entry and the prize, see here

Back to normal

Just a little note to everyone to say that the login/out issues have been fixed and that your patience this last week whilst we had problems was appreciated. Thanks to both the people who provide free support on the efiction forums and to the powweb technicial support staff, too.

The polls are also working once more, so we now have an up-to-date one for you guys to vote on. Enjoy. :)

Login/out issues

Just to let everyone know, the archive has a few issues at the moment. They mainly affect logging it and out for registeed users, though many of the account info are also inaccessible currently. However add/manage stories/series still works, as does submitting reviews while logged in - writers simply cannot view and respond to reviews or edit personal information.

Attempts to fix this have already been made, sadly the polls don't work due to the first try at this but we hope to have these problems worked out soon.

It was also brought up, by Corran over on the weirmckayship yahoogroup, that the SGA zine Space Odyssey is looking for submissions, with all pairings welcomed, including Weir/McKay. We're Back

Well, the site migration is done. Apologies for how long it took, though thankfully everything appears to be in working order.

If, however, anyone finds anything out of the ordinary, strange errors that do not go away upon refreshing the page, then don't hesistate to contact me about it with as detailed a description as possible.

Anyway, catch up time, if you've posted fic suitable fic elsewhere then don't forget to add it here. Due to the week long closure the Most Recent page is currently empty, here's hoping it won't stay that way for long. :)

And welcome to our several new members, sorry that your arrival was followed by a period of maintenance but every now and then it has to happen. But all is restored today. Stories can be added, anonymous reviews are back up for those who aren't registered and we have a new poll in honour of the impending Season 3.

Closed for maintenance
The archive will be closed from 12am GMT June 10th due to hosting migration but hopefully the site will be back up and working fine by June 18th if all goes well. During this time we ask that no one signup a new account or try to submit reviews etc so that the database is not updated with new info that could potentially be lost during the transition. We apologise for any inconvenience this causes and any questions about this can be addressed to the following email: alienforce at gmail dot com.

Lengthy Downtime of June 10-11th
Heads up on downtime next weekend, of June 10/11th. The website hosting is moving servers ("migrating") and to make sure everything goes smooth I'll be closing both sites for the weekend, backing up everything I can then and fingers crossed the move will go okay and with no data loss.

I apologise for the inconvenience of this but it's not something I can prevent since the move has to happen and the closure will hopefully ensure it will go smoothly.

Upgraded

The archive has been upgraded to 2.0.4 efiction now, with a main new feature of being able to use the text forms with html source viewable so you can edit text directly with html tags.

However, the upgrade caused a few problems. I've fixed all the ones I'm aware of but it's possible there are more I haven't found, so if anyone comes across anything unusual that is not fixed by refreshing the page or clearing your cache and restarting the browser then I'd appreciate it being reported to me.

Hopefully there won't be anything else wrong and you'll benefit from the improvements.

A few things

Firstly I apologise for an inconvenience caused by a fault that caused yahoo ID's to not display on the site, this issue is now fixed. No need to re-enter any data.

Also, I'd like to point out that though the fanfic archive is associated with McKay/Weir Central, they are separate systems requiring separate registration. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused people. So far there is no way to merge the two, hence if you've signed up here and want to use the forums you need to sign up there as well.

Lastly, there is only one more day left to nominate your favourite stories in the Isis Awards - the nomination phase ends January 20th.

Help Section Updated

The FAQ & Help section has been substantially updated and will now be much more useful in explaining how the sites system works. You can take a look at the updated help section here or simply by clicking 'Help' on the menu, next to 'Account Info' (or 'Home' if you are unregistered/not logged in).

If anyone has any suggestions for improvements or additions to the page then please do contact us or comment on this news item.

Challenges

With the new vesion of efiction we are now using, any registered members can add their own challenge. To start off I have added a great number of existing challenges to the challenge section, taken from WeirMcKayShip and WeirMcKaySmut yahoogroups, mainly to allow people to list pre-existing responses to them but also because many are open ended and unanswered .

To explain the challenge system, adding a challenge is fairly easy - click issue challenge whilst logged in and then fill in the details of the challenge, plus any required characters and/or the categories for it to fall under, if any. Click submit and there you go. Responding to a challenge is also simple. First you must have submitted the story to the archive. Then find the challenge in question, click on respond to the challenge which bring up a page that lets you tick boxes to select stories as responses to that particular challenge.

A special new challenge has also been added in honour of the fic archive opening - see here.

Open for business

The archive is open to submissions. There are a few bugs that are being caused by a policy change with the webhost but hopefully they will be sorted out soon and generally speaking the system is working well and ready for all the content you guys can throw at it. :)

EDIT: Anyone who is having problems with subcategories not working when submitting/editing a story needs to check their javascript settings, this particularly applies to Firefox users.
